I watched the children play today at the playground
as I sat on a swing.
There were four of them
all together,
laughing and running.
One little boy and his sister,
with dark Spanish skin
and brown almond eyes.
One with golden flax hair,
and one with long, milk chocolate locks.
All together they represented a past, a present, and a future.
At the moment, all they could think of
were the immediate fleeting pleasures of this uncertain life.
Where had they come from?
But more importantly, to where were they going?
When would each one of these beautiful children
undergo the shift from innocence,
to take on their prescribed role
in the cruel reality of this world?
I did not want to know the answers
to these burning questions quite yet.
So for the time being,
we spun round and round
in a whirlwind of innocent, careless bliss.
Living in one of life's few moments
of pure certainty.
as I sat on a swing.
There were four of them
all together,
laughing and running.
One little boy and his sister,
with dark Spanish skin
and brown almond eyes.
One with golden flax hair,
