Twilight Union
The tender kiss of daylight upon a cheek
The hope of things to come suspended in morning air
The small confused creature timid and meek
Lying in front of you. So naked, so bare.
What’s to become of this twilight union
That two strangers by chance did share?
They touch each other all over
But they do not feel each other anywhere.
The sweat trickles freely from each open pore
The body circulates blood to save vessels from strain
The pile of clothes lies strewn about the floor
She may wash away the dirt, but still there is a stain.
What’s to become of this twilight union
That two strangers surely did share?
They explore each other eagerly,
But they pretend not to care.
The knuckles stretch white with clenched fist
The phone rings, shattering fragile silence
The moment dissipates into mist
Erected between them is a wall of defense.
What will become of a twilight union
That should never have been shared?
Had they the strength to resist
One broken heart could have been spared.
The hope of things to come suspended in morning air
The small confused creature timid and meek
Lying in front of you. So naked, so bare.
